A to Z of Gaming Me: A

Merry Easter, Happy April and welcome to the first entry in Khinjarsi’s A to Z of Gaming Me.

We begin at the beginning with A:

A – Age of Mythology
Age of Mythology permeated my young brain in ways few other games have. The soundtrack is on my iPod, the cheat codes engraved in my mind and the joy of controlling Hydras in my heart.

It plays pretty much the same as Age of Empires, but this time I got to play as a God, calling upon ancient Heroes, monsters and even godly powers to help me dominate the ancient world.
Being a bit of an Ancient Egypt nerd (then and now), I nearly always had Ra/Horus/Ra-Horakhty as my Titan, but was never really put off by the odd mix of mythology and cultures.

Of course, as a youngster, I found great joy in playing with the various cheats I could type in to try to beat the opposition. Typng Pandoras Box into the in game chat would grant you 4 random god powers, which were always fun to play with – BAWK BAWK BOOM rained down explosive chickens, WUV WOO gave you a flying purple hippo, O CANADA granted you a Lazer Bear unit and RED TIDE turned all the water red, killing the fish.

Unlike Age of Empires 2, I haven’t returned to the Mythic Age, and I’m not sure if I want to.

Honorable Mentions: Animal Crossing Wild World
Sometimes you need to chill out in a soothing, charming animal world where Tanuki grant you mortgages.

Next time, you guessed it – B!

  1. This is really cool! I’ve never played Age of Mythology, but it sounds like a game I would love to get my hands on. Happy Easter!
